The biggest mistake in ordering a pond liner is ordering one that is too short. Make sure your measurements include the depth on both sides, and ledges, and enough to go under the perimeter rocks (3 ft on each side), and over the top of a cascading waterfall. You don't want to discover as your installing the liner that you are a foot too short.

Many if not most professional pond designers and installers use 20 mil thick PVC. Some worry about the cold weather brittleness of PVC. Homeowners tend to want a no hassle pond liner and use 30, 45, and even 60 mil thick material that is much more difficult to install because of its greatly increased weight. A 20 mil PVC liner weighs .13 pounds/sq ft. A 30 mil PVC liner weighs .2 pounds/sq ft. A 45 mil EPDM liner weighs .3 pounds/sq ft. A 60 mil EPDM liner weighs .4 pounds/sq ft.

UPS will ship liners up to 140 lbs. Over 140 lbs we need to ship by truck. Most trucking companies charge $25 to $30 extra to deliver to a residential address (if you can have it delivered to a commercial address you save the $25 - $30). Shipping charges vary from about $25 to about $75 depending on weight and distance. We also ship internationally.

Repair of PVC liners is very quick and easy, and can even be done under water.

The biggest mistake in ordering a pond liner is ordering one that is too short. Make sure your measurements include the depth on both sides, and ledges, and enough to go under the perimeter rocks (3 - 4 ft on each side), or into an anchor trench.

Don't forget to go over the top of a cascading waterfall, or you can use a separate liner piece from the waterfall into the pond. You don't want to discover as your installing the liner that you are a foot too short.

Many if not most professional pond designers and installers use 20 mil thick PVC, but they don't worry about leaks or maintenance over the next 5 years or so. If fact, there is some recent evidence that PVC liners will deteriorate from ultraviolet light over a period of 5 years, unless completely protected from sunlight.

Homeowners, on the other hand, are willing to spend a little extra upfront for a maintenance free, tough, forgiving, elastic, thick synthetic rubber liner. They want a no hassle pond liner that will last for years, is resistant to leaks, and can easily be repaired, even under water. Firestone's Pond Gard 45 mil EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer) is warranted by Firestone for 20 years against deterioration, and it's safe for Koi.

A 45 mil EPDM liner weighs .3 pounds/sq ft. See the following tables for sizes and weights.

A 60 mil EPDM liner weighs .4 pounds/sq ft., and is available by special order.

UPS or RPS will ship liners up to 150 lbs. Freight for these liners is typically $50 to $100, depending on weight and distance from Denver.

Over 150 lbs we need to ship by truck. Most trucking companies charge $25 to $30 more to deliver to a residential address (if you can have it delivered to a commercial address you save the $25 - $30). The reason for this is a semi-trailer pulls up to a commercial loading dock where a fork lift truck will drive into the semi, pick up the liner, and back out onto the loading dock. For a residential delivery, they must transfer the liner to a smaller truck with a lift gate and hand truck. Remember, these liners can weigh a lot. Trucking freight is typically $100 to $300 depending on weight and distance from Denver. Delivery time can be as short as 3-4 days.

We also carry:

  1. Firestone Seaming kits - come with a pint of adhesive, 25 feet of 6" wide batten strip, scrubber pads, and seam roller - $67.
  2. Firestone Quick Prime cement for splicing EPDM sheets together - $67 per gallon
  3. Firestone Bonding adhesive - neoprene based contact adhesive used for bonding EPDM sheets to wood, metal, concrete, etc. $67 per gallon
  4. Firestone Lap sealant - EPDM based sealant for sealing splice edges, when splice adhesive is used. - $10 per tube.
  5. Pipe boots - 1-3" and 4-6" $35. These boots have a tapered end EPDM boots.jpg (38269 bytes) attached to an adhesive covered flat doughnut skirt. You cut the tapered end to match the pipe size that penetrates the liner, tighten the hose clamp securely around the pipe, and then seal the adhesive skirt side to the inside of the liner. These are available in either 90 or sloping boots.
